Instead of simply reading your rules to the students on the first day back to school, let them find the answers to their most common questions.
"Can I Chew Gum in Class?" activity includes 30 questions, written in typical teenage "voices." Here's a sampling of the questions asked:
"Can I Chew Gum in Class?"
"When is it OK to use my cell phone, because I will totally die if I can't use it!?"
"I completely forgot to turn in my essay. Oh well, it's only been a week and a half. I can still turn it in, right?"
"Yo, I'll be dismissed from school early on Friday for football and will miss English class (darn!). What am I supposed to do?"
"I just downloaded this new song from Jason Derulo because he is sooo H-O-T! I can listen to my iPod in class, right!?"
...and many more!
I included my own answers to these questions, but you can customize this handout to fit your needs. You school and class rules will vary, but chances are the same or similar questions will be asked.
Microsoft Word Version - Can be edited to suit your needs.
UPDATED: Newly added Quote/Speech Bubble activity that can be used on the first day or anytime! They can be used for exit slips, bellringers, etc.. For any content area and a wide range of ages.
This can be used for back to school, new semester, a new group of students, or just when you want to refresh your class rules with students.
