Objectives: 1) Understand the definition of the center of mass

2) Develop the equations to calculate the center of mass for 1D and 2D

3) Realize several real world applications of the center of mass

4) Understand how the center of mass changes in 1D and 2D by manipulating simulations

5) Be able to calculate the center of mass in 1D and 2D by solving the equations in the simulation drills

Time To Use: ~ 3 hours or four periods of instruction

Requirements: PC computer, Windows 98 or newer, 1028 x 768 monitor resolution

Overview

The Center of Mass Tutorial is a software presentation (for classroom use) or tutorial (for student use) that covers both the basic concepts and calculations of center of mass (c of m) in 1, 2, and 3 dimensions. The software includes a number of simulations that visually illustrate how the center of mass changes as the associated variables change. There are also drills that follow the concept and demonstration screens which can be used for assessment purposes. The scores for these drills are saved and shown on the main menu screen.

The software is downloaded as an executable (.exe) file which, when double clicked, will install the software on your computer. Following is a list of the sections, which can be run from the main menu, and a brief description of each:

* Definition of c of g

Definition of the center of mass.

* 1D Two Object Demo

A simulation illustrating how the center of mass changes for two objects in one dimension.

* 1D Two Object Equation

The basic equation for the center of mass of two objects in one dimension is developed.

(3 frames)

* 1D Two Object Drill

In this simulation, you can practice calculating the center of mass for two objects in one dimension.

* Earth Moon Problem

Can you calculate the center of mass of the earth & moon system in one dimension?

* Earth Moon Simulation

In this simulation, you can see how the center of mass of the earth & moon system effects their orbits.

* 1D Subtraction Demo

Another simulation, this one illustrating how a hole in a circle changes its center of mass.

* 1D Subtraction Equation

An equation is developed to deal with the hole in the circle problem. (3 frames)

* 1D Subtraction Drill

simulation where you have to calculate the center of mass for the hole in the circle.

* 2D Two Object Equations

To find the center of mass for two objects in two dimensions, we calculate a value for both the x and the y.

* 2D Two Object Demo

A simulation that illustrates the center of mass for two objects in two dimensions.
