I don't know about my fellow teachers and home-schooler parents out there, but I have noticed my students tend to have trouble describing a character from a book or story; especially those questions that ask "how did the character feel?" I get answers like happy, mad, glad, sad...etc. without their understanding of why the character feels that way. My 3rd graders also tend to focus on the visual. They want to tell about what the character looks like or what he/she is wearing. As a result of my frustration, I developed a character map to help my students understand that there is more to a character than just the way they look. My students then use these maps to help them write a paragraph describing their character. Included in this download is a blank character map for your advanced students who like to create their own, a labeled character map for those who need some guidance, and an example of my student's work. Please be kind enough to leave feedback if you liked the item and/or give suggestions to make it better.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a success story. I have been visually impaired my entire life (considered legally blind) and was told I should go to a special school. When my mom chose to keep me in public school, I showed everyone I could rise to the challenge. I not only completed all of my years of schooling, I went on to become a Nationally Board Certified teacher in a regular ed classroom. I am living proof you can achieve whatever you put your mind to and there are no limits. I know teachers will enjoy my free content as well as find reasonably priced kits that can be poster-sized and will save them tons of money in the stores. Teachers will be able to receive one-of-a-kind graphics from my store. I am about to embark on my 15th year of teaching. Nine of those years have been in private schools, the rest in low-income urban schools. I consider it an honor and a challenge to meet the needs of my students on their individual levels. I love technology and implement it into my daily teaching routines and strategies. I hope that I can share some creations with you all on this site that you will enjoy and implement into your own classrooms. I have taught every grade within my Early Childhood Certification.
