This lesson is great for teaching character traits by starting with lima beans to review adjectives. Then using the book, A Bad Case of Stripes, will practice character traits as a class. After that students will receive character cards. They will read the description of the characters and make inferences to determine character traits.
This is a lesson your students will remember for sure!
Lesson includes:
- Step by Step Instructions
- Character Traits Poster
- Lima Bean Adjective Sheet
- Camilla Cream Character Traits
- List of Character Traits (for your kids to use during the lesson)
- 6 Character Cards
- Response Sheet for Character Cards Activity
- Character Traits Sheet for students to use with their own books
I used this picture book with a before school group as we prepare for state testing. This was a great resource to use along with the book to teach about character traits.

Use to read this to my daughter when she was little all the time. Never thought I'd be reading it to my students for an entirely different purpose but so glad I am! Thanks!
Love the whole packet! Thank you for not only the character traits activity for A Bad Case of Stripes, but for all the added practice with other made up characters as well. Wonderful!

I teach ELL's. It would be good to provide a word bank of adjectives for the lima beans, as well.
We made a connection to Tight Times, which we recently did as a read-aloud/shared reading.
I really like what you have presented in character traits, but the free download has improper grammar. Some people are not some peoples is allergic, etc.
I am assuming that you are talking about my peanut butter download. I intentionally used improper grammar, that was the point of the activity. The sentences are daily fix it sentences for the students to correct. The answer sheet shows the corrected sentences. I sure hope that you don't think that my grammar is that pitiful. :)
I like all your resources. Easy to follow. Fun to do!

Loved this! Used with my 3rd graders last year and they loved it. I reused it with my 4th graders this year and some that had done it last year, were still very interested and loved it.

I love this purchase, but I have one question. In the directions it says for the students to use the graphic organizer on page 6 to give to students in small groups in order to record physical and character traits. On the photos of your students I can see them using this page but when I downloaded it was not included. Is this something that was left out intentionally? Thank you!
I have updated the unit and changed some of the pages, but not the photo. The updated sheet is in your unit on page 7. I added a few things on the handout to make the activity a little clearer.
I am starting my tenth year of teaching. During that time I have taught 4th and 5th grades. I am currently teaching 4th grade. I absolutely love teaching! I have the best job in the world!
