The purpose of this experiment is to determine the percent composition of carbon in a sample of sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3.

Reacting sodium bicarbonate with sulfuric acid will release carbon in the form of carbon dioxide. According to the Law of Definite Proportions, the mass percentage of carbon in the bicarbonate will be constant, no matter how much sodium bicarbonate is used in the experiment.

You will be determining the percent composition of carbon in sodium carbonate, both experimentally and theoretically. You will compare your two answers and calculate your percent error.

MATERIALS: Small test tubes, Beral pipets, Balance, Sodium bicarbonate, Sulfuric acid (2N)

Your download will include a lab that is ready to be copied and passed out to your students. You can have your students write their own lab reports or you can use the included student data sheets. The lab will include Title, Purpose, Introduction, Safety Precautions, Procedure, Data Tables, Follow Up Questions, and Teacher Preparation Notes.

Answers are included.

You will receive both an editable Word document and apdf form of the lab.
