This is a silent e long vowel word sort using crayons instead of slips of paper. Students identify the pattern and fill in the area with the corresponding color. This allows students the opportunity to really zero in on the active vowel in the silent e patterns without the added strain of comprehension. I use this after I have taught the silent e phonic pattern. I have used it as a large group assignment, a partner activity and a literacy center. I usually print the picture on both sides to allow the students to color the picture as they wish after they have finished the assignment. I do not use predictable color patterns in the assignment. Some sweet first graders just can't "hang" with an abstract coloring of such a cool picture
