Are fractions a bore? Do you need something besides a "drill and kill" activity? In this five page handout, specific words are given. The students are instructed to figure out the correct fractional part of each particular word. (Example: The first 2/7 of WEATHER which would be WE.) If they correctly identify each fractional part, when they write the fractional parts on the lines provided, a new word is created. Each group of new words becomes a holiday message.
In the original handout, there are seven holiday messages all together. That means there are seven ways for the students to practice identifying fractional parts in lowest terms. Have several of your holiday fraction products and they are always a hit. I like to use them in math stations right before the holiday when their minds are sometimes not all "there", but this pulls them back and engages them. Thanks!

I love this idea for fractions! Not only are they practicing spelling and math, but even I had to think when creating the new words, so I know the students would have to think as well!

I have all of these word fractions and they are terrific bellringers. The kids are engaged and enjoy solving the riddles. I am alway looking for thought provoking focus activities. Not only are they enjoyable but it is great practice for reducing fractions.
