This is a fun and challenging project that the kids love and learn a lot from. It's a great way to teach your city's history while they study a city of their choice. I taught Denver history by doing each part of the project as an example before they did it for their city. Some parts I had the kids do for both their city and for Denver, such as the famous people and the symbols. They each studied a different famous historic figure and symbol for Colorado and shared them with the whole class.
Activities integrate writing, reading, art, research, history, and geography and mapping.
Fabulous end product that students are very proud of.
Includes a rubric.
This project was done with 3rd-5th graders, but can be adjusted for older students by adjusting the amount of writing required or adjusting the depth of research required.
Thank you so much for this product! I am teaching a semester long unit on cities across the United States and Ive had a very difficult time finding resources! I love your suggestions for things to do to study each city and the way you have the activities divided. Thanks!
