The Checkbook Project pumps life into a classroom the way the stimulus package pumped bucks into GM. It improves test scores, inspires the entrepreneurial spirit, and even turns "thugs" into pussycats. Simply put, it's a more complex form of "class money" without the bother of handing out Monopoly bucks (which often get lost and stolen). But it's also much more. It's a "real world" simulation, an economic infrastructure that promotes work ethic, practical math skills, and you guessed it,financial literacy. These five pages tell how to make it work. Believe it or not, we created it when I was teaching a third grade class. Today the entire 4/5 wing of our building uses it with fantastic results. The key is taking your time to teach and reteach during the first two or three weeks. Almost every kid will start getting it by the third week. Thanks!

I love checkbook systems! It's such a great way to teach financial responsibility. I've been using a checkbook system all year with my 5th graders, and this pdf file has some seriously great ideas that I want to incorporate.

Great project, well designed, although a little much for my 5th graders, mainly due to the limited time available to teach all that is required. I use class money and can see incorporating this nicely. Thank you for the super ideas and clearly written forms with a definitely upbeat tone.

Thanks. I've used the Checkbook Project with 4th and 5th graders. It's always challenging early on, but once they get the hang of it, it's pretty easy for all but the most disorganized kids. The secret when you're first starting is time (especially for those first couple of tax reports). The secret once you get going is trust (so that you don't have to be checking through every last checkbook every time--spot check, like IRS audits instead).

I am presenting my mini-economy system at a catholic schools conference in November. Would you mind if I included your packet & your website? I have utilized a mini-economy in my classroom since I have been teaching! We even take it to where students have to run a "store" and produce a good to sell. Last year the 6th grade teacher jumped on board and her class had to make, market & produce goods to sell to my class as suppliers (like how Walmart orders their products from a supplier). This year the 4th grade teacher is having her class mass produce an item that will be sold at my store! The children absolutely love it! The store is then opened up to the entire school! We provide the money (students make) to the other teachers and the kids come to the store to buy their products! During the 3rd & 4th quarter, the students must then pay income tax based upon what they make! (They really don't think it is right to loose their money to taxes! It is comical!) The parents think it is a wonderful thing too! Great system!
