If we want students to behave appropriately and work appropriately in our classes, we have to emphasize the desirable behaviors in our classes. This Class Participation rubric can be modified for all courses in grades 7 through college. The rubric is passed out at the beginning of the grading period when the teacher explains how students will be given a class participation grade. At the end of the grading period, students rate themselves individually, write an explanation to justify why they believe they deserve the grade they list, and then the teacher reads their explanation and assigns the final grade. The handout also includes specific directions for how teachers can use the rubric to improve student behavior and work habits. My students' classroom performance improved tremendously after I started using the attached rubric.

I worked in schools either as a middle school teacher, high school teacher, or administrator for over thirty years. Most of my experience has been in high school English classrooms. I have taught everything from ninth-grade literature to students with major reading problems all the way to AP English Language and Composition teacher. Although I love teaching, I retired at the end of the 2009-2010 school year when over 500 teachers in my district lost their jobs because of the bad economy. I'm praying that the economy will improve and I will be able to find another teaching job in high school or college in the future.
