All teachers, especially substitute teachers, need an arsenal of attention getters. Many teachers use nonverbal attention getters such as bells or other noise makers, clapping patterns, or light dimming. Many teachers say the keys to getting the attention of a class are to teach various attention getters and vary when you use them to keep them fresh.
This is a collection of letter-sized posters with some of the most common verbal call and response attention getters used in elementary classrooms. The teacher’s saying is bigger at the top of the poster, and the students’ response is at the bottom. And since almost anything can be turned into a call and response attention getter, I am including a blank poster for you to create your own personalized one.
I suggest printing out a few to start with, post the one you will be using, and teach that to the students.
Sayings included are:
• Give Me 5
• 1, 2, 3 Eyes On Me
• Hocus Pocus Time to Focus
• Chicka Chicka Boom Boom
• SALAME
• All Set You Bet
• If You Can Hear Me (Follow Directions)
-such as clap once, put your hands on your
head, touch your nose, etc.
• Class Yes (from Whole Brain Teaching)
