How it works is this: If a student enters my class after class starts, they sign their name on the blotter with the code of "T" for tardy. If they don't have homework, pencil, calculator, etc, the sign the blotter with a "M" for missing material. If they are asked to stop misbehaving and they do not, the sign a "B" for behavior. Students sign it themselves so that they remember they are on the list. I bring this log to conferences so I can share with the parents if there is a problem. (It's an extremely convenient way to log the three problem areas I've listed above--very little effort on the teacher's part!) Then, at the end of the term, I use the blotter to help me determine the students' participation grade. Each time their name shows up, I subtract 2% participation. There is no way to "make up" those lost points.
This was the best management tool I've ever added to my classroom. It almost completely stopped tardies and it really helped the students who have disruptive behavior tame themselves while in my classroom. It was, you could say, a lifesaver for me! TEACHING EXPERIENCE
I currently teach Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry to 7th and 8th graders in the Northern suburbs of Chicago. I have been teaching since 2004, and I have noticed that many of the units I'm looking for aren't already bundled in a nice package...so I made them myself!
