### PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

In these activities students will discover the formulas for area of a parallelogram and area of a triangle.

Included are:
1. Detailed Teacher Notes describing each part of the activity
2. Grids with figures drawn to be copied for students
3. Student Activity Sheets for Two Separate Activities
5. Two Extension Activities

These activities are great for groups of 2 to 4 students. Each student should have his/her own activity sheet to answer. These include hands-on activities that help students to discover and understand the area formulas of parallelograms and triangles. In the triangle activity, students decompose a rectangle into 2 triangles to compare the areas. Then they must decompose a triangle into 2 right triangles and compose a rectangle and compare the areas.
One extension activity has the student use "b" for the base of a triangle and relate "1/2 b" to the base of a composed rectangle with the same height. Another extension activity has the student decompose a trapezoid into a rectangle and two triangles in order to find the area of the composite figure.
These activities are for the common core standard listed below.

Common Core State Standard:
6th Grade – Geometry – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving area, surface area, and volume.

6.G.1 – Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.

Mathematical Practices:

Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
Use appropriate tools strategically.
Attend to precision.

Thank you for creating this great resource!! The students were engaged while learning the purpose of the formulas. I have only used the triangles section; but, very pleased. The only suggestion I have would be to separate the questions so it is easier to know what questions corresponded with what shape.(i.e. we were not sure if number 9 went with the second or third shape). Thank you.
Thank you so much for your feedback!
I will use your suggestion and name the figure from the grid that should be used with each set of questions. I am sorry that was not clear when you used the activity. Be looking for a revised resource soon.

**Product Revised**
The revised version of this resource has been downloaded. Please let me know if the changes have made it clear as to which figure should be used for question #9. I am looking forward to your response as you edit your comments above. Thank you so much!

This was helpful for my first geometry unit - only trouble was the shapes printed on top of some of the words so the bottom of a couple pages was tough to read. Quality material though!
I am so sorry this did not print correctly for you. The shapes should not have printed on top of any words. This is a Microsoft Word 2007 document. If you were using the 2003 version of Word that could be the problem. I will be glad to send it to you as a PDF and see if it prints correctly. Thank you so much for the feedback. My email is hratliff22@yahoo.com. Please let me know if I can send you the PDF. I really would like you to have the correct copy. Thanks.
