I use the “Show Your Thinking” page to create a Math Journal that is aligned with the Common Core (K.NBT.1). In order to make the math journal, I make twenty copies of the “Show Your Thinking” page for each journal. I then bind them into a book. At the start of math each day (or you can use as morning work), I advise the children of the number of the day. They then have to show the number a variety of ways. At this point in the common core standards we are really trying to master the numbers 0-20 (I usually exclude zero on this activity). I typically assign the first couple of numbers as a whole group to ensure all students understand how to use this page. I recommend not assigning the numbers in order. I usually skip around when assigning a number to really assess for mastery and understanding of this standard.
