To all my K & 1st grade (even Pre-K) homeschool & classroom teacher friends....I've teamed up with a teaching buddy in CA to create a year-long read-aloud based, common core aligned, phonological awareness curriculum.

This FREEBIE is a sampler of the phonological awareness curriculum we have created. This freebie is a complete week of curriculum. If you follow our phonological awareness curriculum in your classroom, which requires 15 minutes on Mondays and 10 minutes Tuesday through Friday, you will see amazingly ridiculous phonological awareness growth in your students. This program is tried and true, used in the K and first grade classrooms at my school. This curriculum is based on 16 phonological awareness skills that we have identified in the Common Core for ELA. (see the Correlation Table in the download). The activities are text-based meaning the words and phrases for the phonological awareness lessons (which we call "listening games") are based on popular read aloud titles from your monthly curricular themes. This program was written around the Kindergarten and First Grade Common Core standards and skills included in the Common Core document, Appendix A, based on phonological awareness research and the general progression of phonological awareness skills in the foundational reading process.

This curriculum is also appropriate for Pre-K and anyone working in a teaching capacity with K or 1st grade students. We are so sure you are going to love our phonological awareness curriculum after using it for just one week, that we think you'll come back to purchase the monthly bundles. The months we have up so far are November, and December, but we intend to have all 12 months up by spring of 2013. This freebie based on the read-aloud book, Too Many Toys by David Shannon, is a title from the December bundle. We will try to stay one month ahead of the the curriculum. If you would like to be automatically notified when we add more curriculum, please click FOLLOW ME at the top of this page. We appreciate you looking at this and trying it out.

I forgot to mention that the best part about this product, is that once you secure the book for the read-aloud on Monday and print your download....there is NO PREP. Heck, if you have an iPad with iBooks, you don't even have to print it out, you can lead the lessons directly from your iPad by sending the document to yourself on your iPad and opening it in iBooks. No copying, no cutting, no laminating...just a book and a script (sort of) and you're good to go! You don't have to think of what to say for each of the 16 skills, we written all that for you!

Our phonological awareness units are for sale in our partnership TpT store at www.hellotwopeasinapod.com Here are the links to the bundles by month:

Hi Jen, I'm looking for something to get me started with RTI in terms of record keeping. Just found out about all that is involved. District not interested in RTI Direct and want us to make own flow charts/graphs and graphic organizers ourselves to show strategies, interventions and when and how long and growth etc. for EACH individual student and intervention................it seems like next to impossible to do. I push-in and run a marathon all day long with 8 teachers/classrooms K-3...........I am at wits end. Put something together that took an entire weekend and it wasn't what they wanted............no direction whatsoever..........any help will be so appreciated...Liz lisbethadams@gmail.com

Hi, Jen. This product sounds AMAZING, but I teach fifth grade! I am horrified on a daily basis on what lazy listeners my students are, and nobody has an official hearing problem. (I had the whole class checked.) Do you have any products that might be adapted for bigger kids? I sure do thank you for your consideration.

Linda...I do appreciate your comment, and I can understand your frustration. I tend to think your students may have a selective listening problem and not a sound manipulation problem. The root cause, I believe, of academic selective listening begins with a lack of empathy for consideration of others. You might check out www.responsiveclassroom.com and begin doing Morning Meetings in your class and see if you see a listening improvement. Take care, Jen
