Common Core Language Standard L.1.1h: Use determiners (e.g., articles, demonstratives).

Although this standard is a part of the Grade 1 Common Core Language standards, this printable was written for my Grade 3-5 students who seemed to:
1) have been "absent that day" in Grade 1 when the standard was taught.
2) be second-language learners.
or
3) have simply forgotten what the terms article and demonstrative mean and why they are so important in written English.
This mini-lesson starts with explanations and examples of correct use of articles (a, and, the) and demonstratives (this, that these, those) and then moves to two practice exercises. One is a set of 20 sentence where students have to read the context and look carefully at the following noun to put the correct article in the blank. Exercise 2 requires students to draw a line under the correct demonstrative for a set of 12 sentences. Some sentences have been made deliberately a bit more challenging and can lead to a good discussion. Answers provided.
