Common Core Standard Reading Informational Text: Compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event or topic; describe the differences in focus and the information provided.
This printable was written to help address the above Common Core Standard. Students are first introduced to and then read several accounts of Rosa Parks’ experience on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955, which was the pivotal beginning of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States. One account is a firsthand account written by Rosa Parks herself and the other three are secondhand accounts of the same event from other sources. Students then answer eleven questions requiring them to differentiate both focus and information in each source, some of which are conflicting and some which agree. Answers provided.
Follow-up American history activities related to Civil Rights, Martin Luther King Jr, and Rosa Parks might logically extend from this printable. Answers provided.
