The new common core standards will require students to relate their story and essay writing to two-three passages of text. The text may be nonfiction, fiction, articles, charts, quotes, or poetry.
This writing prompt contains three texts for the student to read (very short) and specific writing prompt directions. The type of writing the students will be composing will fall under the category "response to literature" because the student will be forced to reflect on their interpretation a poem and structure of a text along with connecting to personal schema. Part of the prompt will require comparing/contrasting two of the texts on the page.
The reading level of the text is fifth grade (due to the poetry), however, depending on the experience level of your students with understanding poetry and reflective writing, this prompt could be used with 5th or 6th grade students (or very advanced 4th graders). It can be used for home schooling or tutoring as well as in the classroom. The directions are detailed, involving multiple steps and critical thinking.
