As a culminating project for my simple machines unit, the students create a compound machine using this project guide. The students are given the challenge of combining two or more simple machines to do a task, like picking up a 5 gram weight.
This project guide allows the student to do reflection through the course of the project. I would always have certain dates that different sections of the guide were due to monitor the progress of the students.
Each year we would have a professional speaker come to educate the students about the design process and the creation of blueprints. I would suggest an architect or civil engineer.
Finally, the students would bring in their compound machines and completed packets for our annual Compound Machine Show. The whole school, along with many families, would come to our hour-long show (set up like a science fair) to view the compound machines. This was a favorite project of many students!
