About Seller

Your students will create easy-to-read "flip booklets" that will allow them to form compound words! Each mini-booklet is on a single piece of paper for ease of use! The students color in the picture of the main word that will be used to create 9 compound words. They then cut out 8 small cards and staple them together to create a booklet in which the cards are "flipped" up to create a new compound word each time.
For example, for the "hand" booklet the students read "handmade." They flip up the word made to reveal the word "writing" while the word "hand" remains. They then read "handwriting." This continues with handbag, handball, handout, handshake, handstand and others to give them a total of nine different compound words all using "hand".

In this book, compound word flip booklets are made from the following words: ball, book, board, down, eye, foot, hand, head, home, house, line, night, over, time, up, and way.

I actually turned these into a assessment GAME rather than a flipbook for my adult education ESL class. Focusing on the compound words made from "house" and "home," I copied the "flip" cards for three different flipbooks onto cardstock, mixed up the cards, and asked the students to sort them, piling them up in the correct position on the master flipbook cards, which show "home" in first position (as in "homework") and "house" in both first and second positions (as in "housewarming" and "madhouse"). This was a GREAT learning activity for ESL because ESL students tend to reverse the positions of the compound word components, saying "choir gospel" for "gospel choir," to take an example from a recent student essay.

These little flip books are wonderful!! By creating flip books for multiple compound words that can be made with one word (eye, hand, etc.), I can really focus my students on using the 2 smaller words to define the full compound word. Thanks so much for creating this! :)

The great part about these flipbooklets is that you can leave out any word or words you feel may not be appropriate for your grade level. However, the definitions for the above mentioned words are:

nightÂ·capâ€‚ â€‚/ËˆnaÉªtËŒkÃ¦p/ noun
a cap for the head, intended primarily to be worn in bed.

nightÂ·club /ËˆnaÉªtËŒklÊŒb/ noun
an establishment for evening entertainment offering patrons music, comedy acts, a floor show, or dancing; nightspot.
