This resource contains over 100 questions and reader response prompts to use for comprehension checks after reading ANY text. They can be used for guided reading groups, after read alouds, during whole-class shared reading activities, for partner discussions after independent reading, or for language centers. Comprehension questions satisfy common core standards for Reading Standards for Literature (1-10), and Reading Standards for Informational Text (1-10).

There are 7 different groups of questions and prompts - one group for each of the comprehension strategies. Each group of questions will make its own fan. You can use a particular fan when studying a particular comprehension strategy, or use different fans to reinforce the different comprehension strategies throughout the year. You could also group all the questions together on a binder clip circle and hang near your desk for easy access during reading activities.

The question sheets should be printed out on cardstock or on regular paper and laminated for extra durability. Cut out the individual questions and punch a small hole in the end of each question. Questions can then be put together with a brass fastener or a binder ring to keep them together.

*** This file has been updated to include a blank page of question fans for each reading strategy. The blank pages are not editable though, so questions will have to be written in. This file also now includes a checklist page including every question for each strategy. Checklists can be used by the teacher to keep track of questions asked, or by the students to keep track of questions answered. ***

My son will be in the 8th grade and has always had problems with reading comprehension. I would like to work with him every day this summer on this and thought you "fans" might be fun and a great learning tool. However, when I try to download a preview of the product my computer says it is a file that can harm my computer and advises against it. I have never had problems with downloading anything on this site....suggestions?

Hmmmm ... I haven't had this problem before. It does download fine on my computer (I just checked). I do know that TPT just verified all files are safe through the Norton antivirus program (see the logo at the bottom right of all pages). However, maybe I would suggest contacting TPT tech support (through the "contact us" link at the very bottom of the page) just to verify it's safe. Thank-you for your question.

I like your Math Journal, but I have never done them before and am wondering if I need to take a workshop or something before I utilize them in my classroom. How did you start?

I didn't take a workshop before I dove in. I saw a few ideas on pinterest over the summer before I started last year, and thought I'd give it a try in the classroom. I knew I wanted to start with a learning goal and foldable tool for each concept I included in the journals, so that's how we started. Over the year, my journal evolved into two pages for each concept, with students really focussing on communicating and reflecting on their learning.

are these suitable for nonfiction/informational text?

These ones are probably best suited to fictional text, but I have a "Genre" set of fans that have a section for informational/nonfiction text.

Hi Jen - Do you make a 'fans' for each student, one for the whole class, or one for each lit. group? I really want to try these. Thanks, Jenn

I have a set I keep together for the whole class - I use it for oral discussions after our read aloud. I have also split the fans into smaller groups for guided reading groups - with the comprehension fans, I'll have different groups using different strategies, and then they'll switch.

I cannot find a place to rate this and add comments. I love this and it is one of the best tools for the "turn and talk" with my fifth grade students. I can also use these as an assessment at the Teacher Table- Guided Reading Groups. Love it!

Thank-you so much! I created it with my own guided reading groups in mind - and I'm using it for our whole class reading responses as well.
Just for future reference, on your "my purchases" page, within each product there is a button that says "provide a rating" (or close to that) - I think it's a flashing link.
Thank-you again for your kind comment!

Hi :) I love this idea (Comprehension Question Fan) and your example questions. Would your questions be appropriate for second grade students?

Hi!
I think some of the wording and concepts might be too difficult for second grade students if they were using them independently. However, if teacher led, you may be able to explain or reword the questions in a way that would be easier for your students to understand.
Thank-you!

Is there any chace that you would use Common Core alignment to these in the future? All of your products are incredible and will be so helpful for me as a fairly new teacher. However, our school district is requiring CCSS to be applied to all/most lessons and coded as such.

They do fit common core standards in both Reading Literature and Reading Informational Text (#1 - #10). Because some of the questions could be used for more than one standard, and the category would change if you were reading informational text or literature, it would be too much for me to place all the standards on each question. I spent hours researching and reading through the grade levels for the common core yesterday to find the best way to align this product (I'm from Ontario), and although they aren't listed on each question card, they do fit many of the standards in the upper elementary grades. Thank-you so much for your interest.
