Use these 24 task cards to help your students practice the making connections reading strategy. The cards are divided into three sets of eight, one for each of the three types of connection (text to self, text to text, and text to world). Because text to text and especially text to world can be challenging, the cards have been created with stories specifically written to spark ideas.

There are several ways to use these cards. You could use them orally with small groups and have students discuss the answers. They could also be used individually with students answering on notebook paper. A recording sheet is included so students can track which cards they have completed. In addition there is a Connections poster included as well.

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Another option is to print on card stock.

Most of my teaching experience is with gifted and talented students in grades 2-4, though I have worked with children of all ages in general education classrooms as well. A few years ago I stopped teaching in order to write nonfiction children's books full time. Gradually over the last couple of years, my career has switched from writing to creating teaching materials here on Teacher Pay Teacher. I love creating teaching products (most recently task cards) and feel just as passionate about my work now as I did when I was teaching.
