This 235 page document includes the student packets for reading and writing, unit assessments, useful teacher notes, and the final exam for an entire English course on current topics and contemporary literature. Used with my 12th grade Seniors for 6 course offerings, the course will lead students through larger concepts on current topics, such as life and death, freedom, the human condition, and differing perspectives. The course will use literature to examine these concepts close up. The novels will include Flowers for Algernon, Tuesdays with Morrie, and Into the Wild, as well as the short contemporary stories: "A Good Man is Hard to Find," by Flannery O'Connor, and "Bananafish," by JD Salinger. The course will also include a literary focus on horror fiction through the authors Edgar Allan Poe, Charlotte Perkins Gillman, and Ray Bradbury, as well as additional authors. The goals for the course are to present life from different viewpoints; encourage students to appreciate and critique authors because of their style and use of technique; improve student reading and writing skills, preparing them for college/life beyond high school; and increase student independency and self-responsibility for learning. The document includes a 3-page table of contents, introduction on the course, introduction on the materials provided, and suggestions for organizing the course; the student packets for studying the novels, short stories and their themes; journal writing assignments; literature discussion notes for the teacher; essay student packets with directions for the students on the process for writing the essays; test assessments objective question answer keys; as well as the final exam consisting of reading a novel, writing 3 essays, and doing one project and presentation. Please understand that this product does not tell the teacher how to teach the books, how to create and teach the units, how to grade essay response assessments, how to teach reading, or how to teach essay writing. As reading and writing is subjective, the course has been left open for the teacher to decide how in-depth he or she wants to go with the main topics and themes, as well as how to grade the writing assignments, which includes the final exam. The product does provide all of the student packets and concepts to cover, but requires the teacher to prepare the lessons to fit his or her teaching style. The teacher notes are extremely helpful and will provide guidance when preparing discussions and lessons. Essentially, this product will set-up up all of the concepts to cover in chronological order and provide suggestions on presentation. Please be sure to preview the 27-page product before purchasing. I think you will be very pleased with the course and all of the time and hard work that has gone into creating it. The students have a wonderful time, connect with the current literature, bond as a class, and are held responsible for their learning. Thanks for your interest!

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

As a New York State teacher of 7 years, I have come to truly understand the requirements of modern-day education. Currently a high school teacher of grades 9,11, 12, I do have experience in grades 6, 7, and 8. A 1 students to 1 computer initiative in my classroom, and the use of the latest modern technology, sets the bar in my school for 21st century learning. My age and recent tenure award have allowed me to have the fresh knowledge of successful educational practices, and creativity that will intrigue today's student.
