This resource can be used either as an introduction to ecological relationships, as project or as a review session to reinforce the main ideas.
The impact of the coffee trade on the environment can help put the topic into a real world context and promote discussion with students.
Some of the main concepts include:
Keywords about ecological relationships and food chains.
The importance of producers and photosynthesis.
How energy is lost through the food chain
Identifying the balance of relationships between organisms in a food chain
Comparing pyramids of energy, numbers and biomass
Describing the effects and variation in concentration of pesticide in a food chain.
Comparing the advantages and disadvantages of growing each type of coffee and the environmental and social factors
The topic is split into 4 tasks which can be done together or split into separate lesssons.
Thanks! I hope it gets your students thinking about current environmental issues as well!

One of our 6th grade objectives stresses how people affect the environment. This lesson is perfect! It ties in food chain/webs, biomes, economics and ecologically responsible behavior. What a winning lesson.
Ask Oddball Science a question. They will receive an automated email and will return to answer you as soon as possible.

This activity isnt really about just researching information but more about applying what the students have learnt already to the problem of growing coffee crops and its impact on the environment.
Level 5 tasks are more guided and can be done without any research
Level 6 require the students to apply ideas but again doesn't really rely on research.
Level 7 is linking these ideas to more complex relationships and research would be useful here as an extension task.
For most of the activities there is an answer key included as well.
Hopefully the preview will give you a good idea about the difficulty of the levels.
