A lot of workers don't know how to count back money to the customer correctly. This ensures the proper amount back to the customer but also saves money for the business by catching mistakes before they walk out the door.
This zip includes two types of activities for students to practice counting money back. It also includes a SMART .notebook file for the Smart response system (clickers) but can also simply be used as a paper/pen quiz if you have the software.
You will need play money (including coins) to help students understand how to count back correctly. I suggest working in pairs and then testing them on the spot as they count back money to the teacher.
My students loved it because it's hands on, it has to do with money (as all high school students enjoy), and a life skill that they can put toward a job in the future.

It takes some modeling of how to count back change with the student. I like to do this over the docu-cam. Then I release students to practice it themselves. From on their own, they figure out how much to give back and write down how many bills (i.e. how many tens, fives, and/or ones) and how much in change (i.e. how many quarters, dimes, etc). While students could just use their calculator to figure this out, it's actually much faster for them to count it back than figuring out the math.

My biggest pet peeve is people who cannot count back change, who depend on the cash register. This helps in teaching this skill. Thank you!

I agree. When an employee only uses the cash register to check how much changes goes back, there is still the possibility of returning too much or too little change. Counting it back correctly is also used as a second check to ensure the customer has the right amount.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
Subject Area:
Taught three years at a SE Portland high school and now teaching on the coast. I teach foods and nutrition, family development, child psychology, culinary arts, middle school FACS, and hospitality and tourism. I also worked for the Disney company for four years. I'm an adviser for culinary arts, customer service, and cake decorating for Skills USA and even had students attend and win at nationals two years in a row!
