Product: Elementary Monthly Reading Log Activity for December

Do you want a creative way to get your students to read outside of school? We have developed fun monthly reading logs that will get your students excited to read at home. Each month there will be a different theme, and your students will have to read a certain amount of minutes in order to receive a reading certificate for the month.

The theme for this month is:climbing Mt. Everest. As students read and record their minutes they progress farther up Mt. Everest. The goal is to reach the summit by the end of the month.

Each reading log packet comes with a student goal record sheet with the breakdown of days in the month to record minutes read, a class recording sheet for the teacher, specific awards for each theme, and a generic award template that you could use every month if you choose to do so. Many months also come with a fun student page where they can track their progress on: a mountain, a podium, a haunted house and so on.

These reading logs have been tested and used in the intermediate elementary level (grades 4-5) and can easily be used for grades 1-3 and even grades 6-8.

Hi GUYS! I was so touched when I read your Thanksgiving post on your blog. I also taught fifth grade for many years and was torn about how I'd teach the real facts to the kids. I didn't want to squelch their ideas of Pilgrims and Native Americans "cuteness" either. I explained that living during those days was different and that there weren't any armies, police, government etc. for protection. Things that happened could have been misinterpreted which would have led to violence that might have been avoided if there had been some kind of intervention. I decided not to describe the violence in great detail either. That being said, I'd like to give you my "Five Kernels of Corn" TpT Thanksgiving activity that I created after I had read a story written by the Mayflower Society. It was apparently taken from an original document. I used it both with my social studies and language arts kids. If you'd like it FREE, let me know. I'm not sure this is a good place to list your personal email address... Soooo if you let me know a day and time that you can download it for free, I'll make it a free item for a couple of hours so you can get it. Just leave me a quick comment about it so that I know you have it and I'll post the price again.

I grew up in New England and "walk among the ghosts of the early colonists". Every building has a story. Native American caves are in the woods where we walk. One of our houses in town has a "regicide cellar" where the King's men hid. I live and breathe early American history. Can you tell I LOVE early colonial history?? We've taken the kids on digs at old mills (1600's) and have found silver spoons, arrowheads and other stuff. Our principal, when he was digging a hole for a chimney near the ocean where he lives, heard a clunk. He had discovered the bones of an Indian woman, possibly a Pequot, who had died in childbirth because the infant's bones were with her. Yale U. carbon dated them .. circa early 1600's! He kept the bones in a class case and visited schools in the area to talk about his "find". Yale U. wanted them too! This is my the product. If you don't want it, it's ok. Your blog entry really struck home when I read it. The turmoil we teachers go through when teaching the real facts is difficult!

By the way, my husband's gr. gr. gr (I forget how many greats!) grandmother was Benedict Arnold's first wife, Margaret. She's buried in the old cemetery five minutes from our house. Ironically, my grandfather owned one of Arnold's homes in Philadelphia before he snuck off to England with his second wife, Peggy Fleming. Our family has the original deed to that home that was written on sheepskin. It's been seen by many historians who have been astounded by its perfect condition. The wax seal doesn't have a scratch!
Sorry to have rambled on and on!!
