This one hundred and twenty-seven page resource for teaching Avi's 2003 Newbery Medal Winner has eight different components.
(1)The detailed CHAPTER SUMMARIES, written in bulleted format for easy reference, provide a quick method for becoming familiar with the material when time is limited and for refreshing memory when using the novel from year to year.
(2)PREREADING ACTIVITIES include a mini history lesson in living medieval, discussion and research topics, and a bulletin board idea.
(3)The VOCABULARY section contains an alphabetized list of all words targeted for study along with their page numbers, book order word lists with definitions and page numbers, and a series of worksheets that address dictionary and usage skills.
(4)The chapter-by-chapter SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS can be use as homework reading guides, pop quizzes, conferencing tools, etc. The questions require detailed, factual responses.
(5)The series of OBJECTIVE TESTS, which cover the novel as chapter-by-chapter quizzes and as a whole book test, do not require story interpretation but rather check for FACTUAL story comprehension. The goal of this component is to build a strong foundation for progression to the higher level thinking skills. The pages can also be put to use as whole-class discussion guides, small-group or independent reading guides, homework, and conferencing tools.
(6)The activities in THINK, WRITE, CREATE, both chapter-by-chapter and whole book, require students to engage the higher level thinking skills of Bloom's Taxonomy. These open-ended prompts cover a range of difficulties from basic to challenges for gifted students. The items address various core skills such as interpretive thinking, character analysis, sequencing, vocabulary building, point of view, compare/contrast, and theme. Some are cross-curricula.
(7)The GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS are unique in that they are based on specific novel events or characters rather than a standard design. Each one offers opportunities for practicing and improving thinking and writing skills.
(8)Full ANSWER KEYS are included.

Immediately after graduating from Lenoir Rhyne College in 1965 with a degree in high school business education, I touched ground and taxied into a self-contained elementary classroom filled to the brim with 38 eighth graders. Not the place I had planned to spend the next thirty years, but unwittingly, I landed where I belonged! Most of my thirty years in education were spent living happily in the delightful, chaotic, but always interesting world of sixth, seventh, and eight graders. For three of those years I served as a facilitator for gifted education in twelve elementary schools, where I worked with fourth, fifth, and sixth graders and dozens of teachers. During the last phase of my career, I traveled to schools throughout western North Carolina and presented workshops based on a program for teaching composition skills that I authored and used in my classroom. In 1997, after retiring from the classroom, I founded Taking Grades Publishing Company and began a second career writing teaching materials for middle grade language arts teachers. The company has enjoyed steady growth and can now claim customers in all fifty states, several Canadian provinces, and even Taiwan!
