PLEASE NOTE: This unit uses a website that appears to be having difficulty - it has gone up and down during the past month or so. I am researching to determine whether the site will be fixed. If not, I will revise this unit and re-post. In the meantime - much of the unit work can be done without the website, or with alternate references about slavery.
This unit (14 days or longer depending on teacher's choices) begins with the exploration of an online interactive Southern plantation home, including slave quarters. Students use what they learn and experience to produce a multi genre project. Mini lessons on teaching various genres are included, as are many websites with primary source examples of different genres. This unit has been used in an American Studies class, and could be used in either US History or an American Literature course.

Help

I began my teaching career by substituting for three years while my own children were young. Then I had the opportunity to fill in for a year while the local high school drama teacher took a leave of absence. During that time I taught all drama classes and directed the school plays. My next position was Language Arts teacher in a high school. I taught there for eleven years. Along with core English classes, I taught numerous electives, advised the student newspaper staff and the literary/art magazine staff. I was also department chair. I then jumped into online teaching, which I have been doing for the past six years. I now teach online Language Arts classes to 7th through 12th grade students. I write online curriculum as well as teach.
