Lesson Lady presents Day of the Dead art lesson for middle or high school students! This lesson will excite and interest your students as they learn about the Day of the Dead and create a related work of art.

The Day of the Dead lesson lasts approximately 4-5 one hour class periods and is an eight page packet filled with helpful and useful information. Everything you need to plan and create this lesson (except art materials) is included!

Included is a five page lesson plan with step by step directions so your students can be successful. Each step is both described and shown with an illustration. Also included is a page with multiple student examples, a one page reading so students can learn about the Day of the Dead and answer questions, and a four point rubric you may use to grade their assignment.

This project is easily adapted to many environments and offers suggestions for alternate art materials so you can create this product with ease using what you already have in your classroom. Basic materials you will use to create the art in this lesson include white copy paper, markers, a pencil, scissors, glue, and pastels or colored chalk.

This lesson will entice your students and I have found even hard to reach students enjoy designing and creating a skull. Please contact me if you have any questions about this lesson!

My concern is the time. How easily could one adapt and halve the lesson time for this interesting lesson? Thanks.

I have done this lesson with high school students who enjoy taking time on their work. I think if you gave the students a strict deadline that would help them finish it sooner or if you work with younger students they tend to spend less time on their artwork. I also gave the students about an hour to sketch and brainstorm ideas. This could easily be reduced as well to save time.

Also, I used paper marbling instead of markers and so we had to allow time for the artwork to dry before we could continue. By using markers you would not have to wait for the paper to dry and this would help it move quicker as well. I always emphasize lots of detail while students draw, but requiring less detail would also help the students finish the assignment earlier. I think by following these steps and giving students a strict deadline will help them finish in time.

I hope this helps! My students did greatly enjoy this lesson and it got lots of compliments as they hung in the hallway at school.
