This six-page supplement has all the poems from the movie "Dead Poets Society" and several quotes and explanations. It's a great resource for students while viewing & for discussions of the poems.
Poems included:
O Captain, My Captain (Walt Whitman)
To the Virgins, Make Much of Time (Robert Herrick)
O Me! O Life! (Walt Whitman)
The Road Not Taken (Robert Frost)
Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day (William Shakespeare)
She Walks in Beauty, Like the Night (Lord Byron)
Excerpts from:

Locksley Hall (Alfred Lord Tennyson)

Two different worksheets follow, one which is harder and asks students to interpret some lines and poems. The other is an easier worksheet that asks specifics about events for the movie (used mainly to keep students on task). Answers are provided for both worksheets.

I love this unit because it helped me turn a movie viewing into a memorable, meaningful, standards-based unit! During our state testing we are not permitted to do any quizzing, testing, or projects, and the students are so burned out after a whole morning of brain drain. Last spring I used Dead Poets Society and this material from Tracee to give my students a useful "break," relaxing (in that they got to view a movie) but thought-provoking yet non-threatening (thanks to Tracee's great ideas!). The unit went VERY well and I will use these terrific materials again this coming spring. The students truly enjoyed it!

This is a beautifully-formatted handout. The supplement worked incredibly well with my students, desired pacing and curriculum. It was just so "me" - I could identify with it, use it in a variety of ways, and reference it as I prepared the students for their test on it. I paired your unit with two other purchases from this site - a Transcendentalism unit and a beautiful PowerPoint presentation. It was a huge success. With all three, the Transcendentalism / Romanticism "month" proved to be one of the best, most meaningful units of the entire year. An excellent resource. Keep up the great work!

I think if they do the writing assignment with it, it can last 5 class periods. Our classes are the same length & we usually run 4-5 days. Have the sub give the students a little bit of time each day to answer questions. The movie is 128 min., so if the sub just shows 30 min. each day & gives them some time to discuss (maybe in small groups) the different poems & answer the questions. Otherwise, the movie would be about 3 class periods & then they could use one to answer questions & the last day do the writing assignment. Hope that helps! -Tracee
