"Dear Mr. Henshaw" is a guided reading plan for Beverly Cleary's novel. Although intented to be used by teachers with a small guided reading group, it could also be used for whole class instruction. The plan is ten pages long and includes three small posters: Question Type Chart, Story Map Chart, and Making Connections Chart. The plan gives background information about the novel (reading level, challenging text features, and overview), as well as step by step teaching directions for guiding your students in understanding the novel. The plan emphasizes "thinking with the text" skills. Short summaries of student reading sections are included, as well as optional writing prompts. My goal was to make a user friendly guided reading plan which required little extra preparation. The only materials you need are copies of Dear Mr. Henshaw by Beverly Cleary and a pack of sticky notes.
