Your students have learned to identify 2d and 3d shapes and now your ready to teach them about which attributes are defining and which are non-defining. My 23 page SmartBoard lesson will help your first or second graders understand the difference between defining and non-defining attributes! The file includes a page of teacher notes, links to 2d and 3d shape videos, interactive pages (guess the shape by attributes, sorting defining and non-defining attributes), a printable worksheet to check for understanding (and a 2nd copy of the worksheet that is customizable for more practice) and 2 anchor posters (to use during the lesson and/or to print and post in your classroom).

FYI - size and color are attributes but not defining attributes. I hope you don't mind but I have tweeked it to show the defining and non defining attributes as per the common core.

Yes, I agree that size and color are non-defining attributes. :-) I designed this lesson to show my students that the non-defining attributes do not allow them to identify the shapes (only the defining attributes give it away). I don't mind you customizing the lesson to suit your needs at all! :-) That's the beauty of using notebook lesson... you can move things around and change them to suit your style. I'm glad you were able to do that.

This lesson is a .notebook file. You will need smart notebook software to open and use the file. This is the software that comes with a smart board. Unfortunately, each interactive whiteboard has its own software and they don't "play well" with each other (smile). Some buyers have told me that some of the other software does have an "import from notebook" option, but since I only have Notebook, I'm not sure how that works. If my lesson doesn't work for you, I sure hope you find some other great resources on TPT!!
