PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This Picture of the Day product (which has been a year in the making) is a great way for students to practice three very important reading skills - observing details by being able to describe them and making inferences about what you notice and observe based on what you see and what you already know. Observing, describing and making inferences are what good readers do. This product uses pictures to give students an opportunity to practice these important skills & strategies without text, but helps them transfer the same line of thinking when reading text.

This product includes:
180 Picture Presentation - pdf (38 weeks worth of pictures)
38 K-2 Assessments - (one assessment per week for the year)
38 3-6 Assessments - (one assessment per week for the year)
1 Assessment Rubric
13 Page "How-To" Handbook (with pictures, student samples and directions)
(the K-2 & 3-6 assessments are the same pictures but the assessment formats are different)

This product is aligned to the following Common Core Standards:

RL.1 & RIT.1 - ask & answer questions about key details, make logical inferences, & draw conclusions based on evidence

SL.2 - Integrate & evaluate information presented in diverse media and formats, including visually…

SL.4 - present information, findings & supporting evidence so others can follow your line of reasoning

I used this all last year with my reading groups and students LOVE it! They become such "close" observers and inference makers based on details and evidence in the picture. Pictures have recently become popular for teaching inferences and Picture of the Day has become a regular column in the New York Times Education section. Pictures used in this product are generously donated from friends and family of Hello Literacy. Pictures represent populations and cultures from all over the world. Please note: Pictures in the slideshow are not meant to be printed out, just projected on an LCD projector or computer screen. Only the assessments are meant to be printed (38 pages).

This activity is appropriate for all elementary grades, K-6. Writing adaption for Kindergarten is explained. This activity can also be done whole group, small group with scaffolding or small group with peer scaffolding (cooperative) as a cooperative literacy center. This activity can be done with any subject that you teach, any specialist or intervention area. Due the nature of the higher level thinking involved in this activity, it is appropriate for all students at all levels, even Kindergarten. In Kindergarten, it is used as a whole class or small group discussion starter to have conversations around answers to these two questions, "What do we see?" and "What do we think?"

Be sure to check out the product preview above and if you have any questions, read by blog post about POTD, and if you have any questions, please utilize the "Ask a Question" tab at the top of this product.

If you're looking for another high quality cooperative, collaborative, 21st century (critical thinking and communication) center, check out my product: Shades of Meaning - Vocabulary and Word Work Center.

Thank You!

I used this the next day after purchasing it. I also purchased Rules for Discussion and Critical Thinking and Sentence Frames for Justifying. All 3 products go hand in hand! I highly recommend purchasing them together. You display the Rules for Discussion and how you want the children to phrase their sentences while going over the pictures. I had been trying to teach these skills before. Now I had the visuals! Thank you, Thank you!!

This is such a WONDERFUL idea. My students participate in Picture of the Day each morning and love every minute of it. It is great to see them come in excited to see what they will find displayed on the board. I have seen the impact it has had on my below grade level readers. Thank you!!

On  April 1, 2014Amber Olson (TpT Seller) said:
Have only used a few photos thus far (and the assessment pages for a small enrichment group), but I am amazed at how much better already my students are getting at thinking about what exactly to means to infer. They clearly understand now to use their schema + picture clues (text clues in reading, but that doesn't apply here), and just today it dawned on me how much inferences have to be made in certain pics at their age! Lack of life experiences + limited vocabulary = this resource is a must to improve those reading skills & background knowledge! LOVE!
On  April 2, 2014Hello Literacy answered:
Amber...it sounds like you and your students are really getting the most out of this product, which is fantastic. Yes, the pictures for some, provide rich substitutions for experiences and schema they don't have or lack. Since media is text, they are like illustrations in books that also offer clues in addition and complimentary of print text. Good job!!! How lucky your students are to have a teacher so in tune with necessary skills for reading and life!

I put this item on my wishlist for a couple weeks. Then, it sat in my cart for another two weeks. Then, over spring break, I started planning my fourth quarter and thought, "I need a systematic way to get students, ALL students, to speak and listen each day." I just bought this tonight. After looking through the collection, I am happy with this awesome product. Thank you!

This looks like a great product. I was wondering if the photos on the assessment photocopy clearly enough for them to see the details? I would not be able to print a class set in color each week.
Thanks

On  November 17, 2013Hello Literacy answered:
Great question! I don't run color assessments either, but having a color original as the assessment master, makes better quality copies. AND on the day of the assessment I still project up (in color) the assessment photo. For example, on Day 5 of Week 1, the ballerinas are on the assessment page and it's on the big screen too, so they can still see all the color and details there too, they're just not discussing or talking about it like on day 1-4. Does that help?

This definitely looks like a "must have" item. I'm curious about the assessment piece. As the weeks progress, how do you elevate your expectations of what the students produce? I imagine their ability level on Day 1 is much lower than Day 148. Is this built into the rubric/assessment piece? Or are the expectation/requirements something the teacher naturally develops while using? Thanks.

Most students have a difficult time with this at first, there is a lot of reteaching that needs to be done and formative feedback that must be given to students in order for the to "get" inferences. In my 20 years as a teacher, the comprehension strategy of Inferring is by far the most difficult strategy for students to grasp....they are dealing with information that is not explicitly stated in the text and/or illustration. The rubric is one piece of feedback, but the teacher input and formative feedback is also going to be key to their weekly improvement. As most rubrics go, it is a 1-2-3-4 scale of characteristics that must be seen at each level in order to receive that score...(((((hopefully)))) all students will reach 4 by the end of the year.

Hi Jen,
Just bought picture of the day and am getting ready to use it in class. I am having a hard time finding the weekly assessment pages. In the product preview above you show Weekly Assessment # 5. Is that sheet included in the packet? Where would I find it?
Thanks

I just downloaded Picture of the Day and quickly glanced through the various pictures. Looking more closely at Week 6 Day 4 and Week 17 Day 2 it appears they are the same photo (an indoor amusement park). I noticed someone previously commented on duplicate pictures using page numbers so I don't if they are the same pictures or not. I did rate the product favorably...because it is a great resource, but I thought you might want to fix this duplication. Thanks.

Nancy...you're a meticulous genius AND a nice person! I checked the file and you're right. I'll fix it on Wednesday when I return home, I'm on a trip right now and don't have my own computer. Thank you for both leaving favorable feedback and for letting me know "over here"...I really appreciate it. I'm working on a Picture of the Day center, I'll email it to you when I'm done.

Hi! I am very interesting in purchasing this product...I was just curious to what the assessment rubric looked like? Is it the Critical thinking Rubric that you have available to download or a different one? How does it evaluate the Friday picture of the day assessment? Thank you!
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  January 9, 2014Hello Literacy answered:
Hi! It is a different one, not the Critical Thinking Rubric. Without giving away my trade secrets for others to copy without buying the product, what I can tell you is that it's a 1, 2, 3, 4 rubric with descriptors based on what the student includes and/or finds confusing, and quantity of, level of degree and level of description & evidence the student provides for observations and inferences made.

Thank you. I love this idea. However, if you ever think of revising this product, I would greatly appreciate if you could add more of a multi-cultural dimension to the photos of people. I work with a broad spectrum of students from all over the world, and I know they would be better able to connect to the photos if they could see photos of people like them. Additionally, I don’t always have access to projection equipment, so if the photos were in black and white it would be extremely helpful, as printing out color sheets is an impossible solution for me. I would definitely purchase another wonderful product like this again, if those revisions were in place. Please let me know. Thank you.

Hi!
I will definitely take your recommendations into consideration for future editions of this product. As stated in the product description, I do not advise anyone to print these color photos out, that is pretty much an "impossible solution" for just about everyone. If you don't always have projection, pulling the photos up on a computer, laptop or tablet is another possible solution. Many of the photos, which I don't think you can see without actually purchasing the product....have you purchased the product?... If you have, you will see, as also stated in the product description, that a "multi-cultural dimension to the photos of people" does exist in many of the photos included. Pictures from North America, South America, Africa, Europe and Asia are represented thanks to the "friends of Hello Literacy" that have traveled around the world and graciously shared their pictures with me. However, I will continue to keep this in mind for Picture of the Day, Set#2, that is in the works, as well as a Picture of the Week Inferring Center that I am currently making where photos will be available in B/W as well as color and 2 per page vs. 1 full page.
Thank you again for taking a look at this product and taking the time to share your revision suggestions.
Take care,
Jen

I have a Mac at home, although I did not create the files on it (which shouldn't matter) but I will look tonight. I know you cannot try to open things in "Preview" mode. You must download the files to your hard drive, somewhere, and they reopen them from there.

Oh, in my class I teach them to code their thinking...I = inference, O = observation, P = prediction and Q = question. They create their own too. It helps them not only use the strategy, but know when they're using it.

I'm so glad you asked this question! This activity is exactly appropriate for Kinders. In fact, when I first read your comment, I went back and amended the product description because I want K teachers to know this is definitely not a product they should overlook. The K teachers at my school used the photo as a discussion starter to answer the following two questions, "What do we see?" (observations) and "What do we think?" (inferences). Inferring questions that you can extend with are, "What do we think happened right before this picture was taken?" and "What do we think happened after this picture was taken?" Kinders can definitely do this! And they will amaze you! Thanks for asking. Jen
