Many times students have trouble with the concepts involved in protein synthesis. This is a fun activity that reinforces transcription and translation. Students are given a DNA template and must determine the complimentary mRNA sequence, tRNA sequence, and amino acid sequence.
In this lab, you will be creating a 'mystery organism'. You must determine which proteins will be made to produce your mystery organism. You will be simulating the process of protein synthesis to determine the traits this organism will inherit. Your mystery organism belongs to the Animal Kingdom. If is made up of 6 different genes (A, B, C, D, E, and F). Each of these genes is responsible for a certain trait.
Purpose:
1. To see how the genes on a chromosome determine the characteristics of an organism.
3. To observe transcription and translation from a DNA template.
Materials: Colored Pencils Paper
Your 7 page download will include a lab that is ready to photocopied and passed out to your students. It will include: Title, Introduction, Purpose, Safety Precautions, Materials, Procedure, Follow Up Questions.
You can choose to have your students write their own lab reports, or you can use the included Student Data Pages on which they can record their data and answers.
I have included a "Teacher Preparation Page" that includes pre-lab discussion, answers to all questions, and some post lab follow up ideas. You will receive two versions of the lab: a PDF and a Word document so that you can make changes if you wish.

I love that I was able to use it without any editing and it was a great way to show not only how translation works but also what it means. The list of codons for the amino acids do not list all of the possible combinations needed to complete the assignment. My students were very frustrated and disappointed that they could not complete this lab.

Your comments and your low rating on this product are completely without merit. This product is one of my best sellers and I have never received a complaint.
There are 20 different amino acids and 64 messenger-RNA codons that code for them. A codon is a group of 3 nitrogen bases that serves as a code for one amino acid. Since the bases are read in groups of three, there are 64 possible ways to arrange the four nitrogen bases into different codons. These 64 codons code for the 20 amino acids. Therefore, many of the amino acids have multiple codons.
On page 2 of the student handout is a list of the 20 amino acids and the corresponding codons that code for them. For example: The first amino acid on the list is Alanine. The chart clearly shows that alanine is coded by 4 codons: GCA, GCC, GCG, and GCU. Each of the 20 amino acids is listed in the chart as are ALL 64 messenger RNA codons.
Amino acid sequences are dictated by messenger-RNA codons. Is it possible that you have your students looking for DNA codons instead of RNA codons on the chart of amino acids? There are no DNA codons listed because one does not use DNA codons to determine the amino acid sequence. This is the only explanation I can conceive of that would explain your comment of "The list of codons for the amino acids do not list all of the possible combinations".
