Do you want your students to be fully involved while reading The Diary of Anne Frank? This rationing activity provides a simulation of hardships for people during WWII.
This activity works well with the Diary but it would also work well for anyone teaching World History.
First students will learn what rationing is and how it worked. They will view a Prezi that thoroughly explains how ration stamps were issued and what you could buy with ration stamps. There are two video clips in the Prezi (one video requires the ability to stream YouTube because of its size the other video is embedded.)
After completing the Prezi, students can participate in a week-long rationing simulation of items that they care about! I use this activity as an extra credit assignment because it is so engaging I find that most students CHOOSE to participate.
I have received parent letters thanking me for this activity telling me how much it has helped their child to appreciate what they have.
If you have not used Prezi before they are just like a PowerPoint only more interesting. They do not take any special software or programs. I have a free Prezi in my store for you to try before buying!
If you are afraid to try a Prezi this is for you ... because I have also included the PowerPoint.

I'm so excited to use this activity. When I taught "Anne Frank" last year, a lot of students had a hard time understanding why rations were so important. Now, I think this activity will be a great way for them to equate giving up things they love/enjoy because they have to. For my middle schoolers, I think it'll be a great connection. Thank you!

I really enjoy this lesson, however, I have been doing it for so many years I can't see it as a "newbie" so any input is appreciated. There should be a Prezi - hmmm. Let me check I will get right back to you. I just used the Prezi at school last week. My students just finished this activity Wednesday, they really liked it. The Prezi has some cool videos in it explaining ration stamp even further. Give me a couple of minutes to check it out. (5 minutes later) I just checked it out and holy smoly ... the prezi is NOT there, thanks for the heads up... I will repost it hopefully I have it here at home, it may take me a few minutes. The Prezi is really cool.
