cards each require students to find a word in the dictionary that fits the given clue. The clues are open-ended, so there will be several possible answers for each one. In fact, one way to offer an extra challenge is to require students to find two different words for each card.

Each card is numbered so students can easily track which cards they have completed. They can record their answers, along with the page number where they found them, on the included answer sheet. There are also six Bonus Cards which require students to use the words they wrote on their answer sheets to complete. One option would be to have students to pick one or more of the bonus cards to complete on notebook paper.

These cards will look best in color, but will also print out fine in grayscale. Simply print and cut along the guidelines. Laminate and use them again and again. Another option is to print on cardstock.

Is this common core? If so are the standards listed?

I created this one before Common Core was being widely used, so no, standards are not included. However, having just looked at the standards, I would say it most aligns with this one:

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.4.4c Consult reference materials (e.g., dictionaries, glossaries, thesauruses), both print and digital, to find the pronunciation and determine or clarify the precise meaning of key words and phrases.

The standard is the same for grade 5 and there is a similar standard in grade 3

I hope that helps.

I love this set, any thoughts on doing it in the same 4 per page format as many of the other task cards? I'm using 'brag book" photo sleeves for my storage and these are a bit hard for my kids to get in and out of the sleeve.

Probably not...sorry. I sometimes use the 6 per page format when there is not too much on each card. Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Hi Rachel,
I'm laminating your Dictionary Dig Cards and noticed that on the cover page it indicates that there is an answer sheet included. I understand that different dictionaries will be different so it may be hard to have all answers but should there be one with the download?? hope this makes sense!

Hi Di,

I think this might be a case of bad word choice on my part. By Answer Sheet, I meant a student answer sheet - a place for students to record their answers. I use the term Answer Key to mean that I have supplied the answers to the questions. And you are right, I didn't supply an answer key because there are different possible answers for each one. However, a sample answer key with at least one possible answer would have been a good addition. Sorry I didn't think to include one.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Most of my teaching experience is with gifted and talented students in grades 2-4, though I have worked with children of all ages in general education classrooms as well. A few years ago I stopped teaching in order to write nonfiction children's books full time. Gradually over the last couple of years, my career has switched from writing to creating teaching materials here on Teacher Pay Teacher. I love creating teaching products (most recently task cards) and feel just as passionate about my work now as I did when I was teaching. I also love knowing that my products help thousands of teachers and reach tens of thousands of students.
