This is a packet of eleven practice activities for basic dictionary skills. Students practice using pronunciations by choosing a word that rhymes with the entry word. They practice using dictionary pictures by finding entry words and drawing a picture of the word meaning. Students decide which guide words an entry would fit between. They look up entry words and show that they understand meanings by choosing the answer to "What would you do with a ___? or Where would you find a ____? Activities require students to write page numbers where they found each word, assuring that they actually find the word in the dictionary, and don't guess. These are fun activities for students to work on independently or with a partner.

As an elementary teacher for 34 years, I have struggled with a lack of quality materials that provide the necessary practice for concept mastery. It has been my experience that many textbooks and commercially produced materials do not provide the depth of practice and repetition required for student mastery. I have been writing most of my own supplemental materials for years, striving to meet the needs of students who need more than one or two exposures to a concept in order to achieve mastery. My many years in the classroom have provided me opportunities to work with changing curriculum standards and increasing demands for student performance. I have worked with second and third graders throughout my career and have a very solid understanding of the learning process and the needs of young students.
