This simple experiment will demonstrate the semipermeable nature of the cell membrane. Students will observe that some substances pass freely across a membrane, while other substances cannot pass through the membrane. This lab has a very simple materials list, and it works every time. Analysis questions are thought-provoking and require critical thinking skills. Answer key is included.

I order it each year along with the rest of the lab supplies for my school. I have ordered from Carolina Biological, Flinn Scientific, Wards. I do not know of where it might be purchased locally, though. If you don't have time to order some, try plastic sandwich bags. They will work just fine. You just have to make sure that they are tightly sealed. The sandwich bags are kind of fun....the students realize that their sandwich is not really sealed up!!
