Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” Speech
High school students seem to have a good background about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They know he led the Montgomery bus boycott and about Rosa Parks; he had a family and was a preacher; he led marches for civil rights; and he gave a speech about his dream in Washington, DC. They may even know some of the content of the speech. I try to lead my students to discover something new that builds on what they already know. This is an activity that helps them articulate what techniques make the speech so brilliant. It may be hard to impress teenagers these days, but after completing this activity, they truly are impressed, and for many, inspired!

I have taught for 14 years. Three of those were in middle school, but the rest have been in high schools. I teach at an innovative high school in Rio Rancho, NM, which is a rapidly-growing suburb of Albuquerque. I helped open the high school ten years ago. It combines English and Social Studies for all students. I teach American Humanities in the Fine Arts Academy. I have helped develop the district's Humanities curriculum every summer for ten years. I serve as the 11th grade Humanities section leader. I am fortunate to work with an outstanding group of educators.
