Children who are beginning to read often believe that they can only read their special "reading" materials at school. This unit is designed to dispel that belief and focus reading instruction on reading real things, starting with classroom objects and areas. In Reading Around the School activities are provided that facilitate the development of oral language, phonemic awareness, print awareness, and syntactic awareness. Skills are integrated as students begin recognizing letters and words and forming letter/sound associations. The activities here require reading to, with, and by learners, with an emphasis on comprehension.

Since 1979, Evan-Moor Educational Publishers has provided teachers and educators with practical, creative, and engaging PreK-6+ educational materials to support and enrich the curriculum. We strive to produce educational materials that are aligned with current standards and best educational practices, but that are also aligned with student interests and motivations. We pride ourselves on our ability to create products that not only build and reinforce basic and complex skills, but that build and reinforce a curiosity about the subjects in which those skills are taught—about reading, writing, math, science, the arts, social studies, and geography—products that help children learn. And, just as important, products that help children love learning.
