PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Students participate in a cooperative simulation/role-playing game in which each group of students is a hunter-gatherer band. The simulation progresses as the unit does, with the agricultural revolution and the changes it brings to each band in your classroom.

Student groups are divided by climate zone, with each band responsible for using the resources in their particular region. Bands will respond to different situations chosen by the teacher (i.e. flood, fire, raid) and trade for items their region does not include. Ultimately, food production begins (agricultural revolution), and students complete the handouts based on the information in their textbook.

PLEASE NOTE BEFORE PURCHASE: I created this simulation to correspond to the McDougal-Littell World History: Ancient Civilization textbook for middle school 6th graders. I am unaware of any significant differences between editions. Also, the simulation is not a scripted step-by-step project, and depends on the teacher to fill in the story.

It is a great idea but I feel like it is missing things I will have to create. You should have a list of scenerios to go along with the simulations. Maybe it is because I do not have the text?
On  August 24, 2013Jennifer Pakradouni answered:
No, you are right. It is not the lack of the text. There are gaps in the project that I have been meaning to fill out, and the scenarios are a good place to start. I thought of them as I went along (when my students did this simulation), and did not have set scenarios. Thank you for your input!

This was a great start off of an activity to give me some ideas on what to do with the unit. However, it lacked clear directions (probably because it did not go with my text). I ended up adopting a lot of it so not necessarily a time saver like I was hoping for.
On  February 24, 2013Jennifer Pakradouni answered:
Yes, the weakness in this activity is definitely the directions. I still have plans to go back and add more specificity to it. I am glad that it was partially useful.

I purchased this knowing that this did not correspond with my textbook; I was okay with that, as I was looking for a simulation and could adapt information as needed. However, this really was more of a collection of worksheets for the textbook (those were good); however, this was not advertised as a collection of worksheets for the book, but rather a simulation. The directions and materials for a simulation were lacking. As a companion for the textbook, this is a great resource. As a simulation itself, this does not work.
On  November 14, 2012Jennifer Pakradouni answered:
I am sorry that this did not meet your expectations (and that it took me so long to reply). While I implemented these materials as a simulation, it was something that I had an idea of already, so I did not have difficulty building the simulation around the materials, which were included to make the students accountable for the information. Four of the eight handouts in the set were directly related to the simulation aspect, with information from the textbook to be used as support as the students completed the information for their band. Your comment was very helpful, and I intend to establish more structure to the existing materials to make the simulation aspect of these lessons more obvious. After reading the guidelines again, I realize that I made the teacher's role very vague, and I understand the difficulty in trying to use the guidelines to implement the materials as a simulation. Unfortunately, I have not had the opportunity to make the materials a little more sophisticated, as of yet. I truly appreciate your comments. Thank you!

On  September 6, 2012,  Buyer asked:
would this follow a unit from a differnt textbook - I mean the info must be the same, right?
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  September 6, 2012Jennifer Pakradouni answered:
As far as the information goes, definitely. You can still use the simulation with another textbook. The only difference would be that I have page numbers that go with particular lessons in the textbook I went by. You can always find the corresponding lesson/unit in a different textbook and tell your students to ignore the page number that is one the sheet (or white it out). Let me know if you have any more questions!

How long does this simulation unit take??
Teachers Pay Teachers
On  October 19, 2011Jennifer Pakradouni answered:
The unit is about 3-4 weeks long, though you may be able to cut it down to 2. It took me about 4 weeks. It depends on how many days you want to devote to each activity.
