Looking for a way to keep track of independent reading? I created this system when I taught sixth grade in middle school. It's fairly simple. Students read for ten minutes in class each day, complete a weekly assignment, and must read at least one book each month. Everything you need to get started is included, with an overview of the materials, an assignment sheet, a weekly menu, and forms for students to complete at the beginning and end of the month. Best of all, it's simple and doesn't require much grading, so you can spend your time matching books to readers and talking with kids about what they are reading.

**2010 Update: I re-posted this as a PDF to alleviate some problems with font conversion. Otherwise, everything is the same.

Just wondering if each of those activities listed under the reading goals is directly related to one of your grade level standards. A few of them seemed to fit in perfectly with our 5th grade standards. Well done!

Emily -

I love the materials that you have here, but I do have a question. Could you re-post it as a Word document as well, so that I can make changes to fit my classroom? Thanks so much!
ps-this is amazing :)

OMG!!! this is wonderful;!! I love it....can you please explain your " clipboard cruise" method to grade this??

Emily Kissner   (TpT Seller)
The "clipboard cruise" is a quick way to give instant feedback to students. While they are reading, I simply go around and score their work. (We do standards-based grading now, so my students can get an E for Exceeding Expectations, M for Meeting, or N for Not Meeting.) Instead of writing comments, I tell the student why they received their score and write it down on my clipboard. I usually do this on Fridays and extend reading time a little so that I can see everyone.

I've posted more on independent reading and reading in general on my blog, http://emilykissner.blogspot.com. Feel free to stop by!
