This quiz was written to test the material on my ecology unit called, Ecosystems and the Biosphere: Biomes of the World.

This document can be used as a quiz, as a homework assignment or as test review. The document contains 44 questions. There are 24 fill in the blank questions and 20 matching questions. Answer key is provided.

This quiz is appropriate for biology or life science students in grades 7 - 12. I use this quiz as a quick and easy check for understanding and to make sure that my students are keeping up with their nightly studying.

Topics covered in this review are:
1. Biomes: Definition of biome, adaptations of organisms to a biome, tolerance levels of organisms.
2. Overview of the major terrestrial biomes: tundra, taiga, chaparral, temperate deciduous forest, temperate grasslands, deserts, savannas, tropical rain forest.
3. Tundra: Definition, location, major characteristics.
4. Taiga: Definition, location, major characteristics.
5. Chaparral: Definition, location, major characteristics.
6. Temperate Deciduous Forest: Definition, location, major characteristics.
7. Temperate Grasslands: Definition, location, major characteristics.
8. Deserts: Definition, location, major characteristics.
9. Savannas: Definition, location, major characteristics.
10. Tropical Rain Forests: Definition, location, major characteristics.
11. Aquatic Ecosystems: Why marine ecosystems are so important to life on Earth, how aquatic ecosystems are determined, the abiotic factors of aquatic ecosystems.
12. Ocean Zones: Photic zones, aphotic zones, intertidal zone, neritic zone, oceanic zone, benthic zone, hydrothermal vents, estuaries.
13. Upwellings, phytoplankton, zooplankton, productivity levels in each zone, species richness.
14. Freshwater zones: Characteristics of freshwater zones, flowing-water ecosystems, standing-water ecosystems, eutrophic lakes, oligotrophic lakes, wetlands, bogs, marshes, swamps.
