Here are a number of ready-to-go ELD (English Language Development—A.K.A., ESL, EL) prompts that you can use for your ELD students if they are mainstreamed into your high school English class.
When I have an English III class with four ELD students, for example, I offer these writing prompts as an alternative when I assign English-speaking students regular essays.
I am throwing in seven worksheets on American expressions. They also can be useful as alternative assignments for ELD students.
This Unit includes:
Ø 13 writing prompts all as individual handouts with clear, thoughtful instruction and guidance for English learners.
Ø 7 additional handouts on American idioms/expressions.
Ø 2 Prompts for alternative book reports—for English learners.
The american expressions are good. I may have to play around with it a bit to provide room for kids to draw a pic though. My students are still very much visual learners at this point, but this helps push in the right direction!

I've been teaching high school English in northern California for fourteen years an hold both a BA and an MA in English. I have taught every level of high school English; I have taught A.P. Language and Composition, ESL/ELD, and Resource English.
