Election Day Unit: Duck for President, Movie Party Campaign, & More

My class is using this for the 2012 election! I've designed this unit to be a bit open-ended so that you have flexibility in how to use it in your classroom. These activities are designed for a class to learn about Election Day. Included is everything you’ll need to develop vocabulary and assess knowledge of basic election words, to campaign for, vote, and elect a Movie Party, and to respond to the book, Duck for President. This unit has 21 fantastic pages!!!!

When I used this unit in my classroom, this is what we did. On the first day, we completed the Know & Want to Learn sections of the KWL chart about Election Day. Then, we read an easy-reader book with basic Election Day information. Next, we completed the election day activities: the learned section of the KWL chart, the vocabulary page, and the true/false page. On the second day, we read Duck for President. Then we completed the pages below as one of the center activities during my reading centers: sequencing, syllable sort, ABC order, comprehension page, and writing activity. On the third day, we talked about campaigning and chose movies to campaign for. Then, the students completed the bubble map, the writing page, and created a campaign poster about their favorite movie. I limited their choices to Dumbo or Pinocchio but I've included blank ones so you can leave it more open-ended if you would like. Finally, the students voted on the movies and we celebrated our unit with a movie party.
