This is a fun activity to do when studying the Transcendentalists, particularly after reading Emerson's "Self-Reliance" and Thoreau's Walden and "Civil Disobedience". Students read each of the 6 quotations and determine the common idea they all share. Then they select one quotation and write their interpretation. Lastly, they listen to several songs (lyrics provided) and jot down which songs reflect the ideas of the Transcendentalists -- makes for an interesting discussion.
(For Civil Disobedience, 2 good songs are "Cry Freedom" by Dave Matthews and "Get Up, Stand Up" by Bob Marley.)
