During this 4 ½ week unit, my students researched an endangered animal of their choice, wrote an expository paper about the animal, and then integrated their knowledge into a fictional narrative about the animal. Included in this unit is the two rubrics that are the cornerstone of the project, a notetaking organizer for the animal, a story map to help organize the fiction portion, a character study organizer to help with the narrative portion, and the materials I used to help students edit. We used Kidspiration Webs (sorry, that won't attach) to organize our facts, and the students used the rubric to self-assess. My overall goals for both the expository and narrative assignments included paragraph organization, writing fluency, and consideration of audience.
