I have just read through this unit, and I see now that your focus and overall tone is on struggling students. This product is not really appropriate for the general high school age- which is why I purchased it. My mistake. Great product, though, for those who have a lot of trouble putting pen to paper!

wow best thing I have bought! I teach at risk 9th-11th graders who come to me with 3rd to 5th grade skills, and I have to get them ready to pass state standards to graduate. These are the kids that have multiple suspensions, hate school, and authority. I have no curriculum so this is awesome THANK YOU

Initially, I was hesitant about buying the product, because of the price. The generous free download, however, convinced me that it was worth buying - and I'm glad I did! Lots of advice and ideas, all carefully structured. This is already proving to be very useful for my group of teenagers with special educational needs.

Secondary Solutions (TpT Seller)
It is different, although the vocabulary for writing, and the structure, are the same. Essay Apprentice is meant as a scaffold to Essay Architect. Essay Apprentice is for lower-level students or those middle/high school students who are struggling to write even one or two paragraphs for an essay assignment.

Can you give me an idea of the timeline to teach this effectively? I'm teaching special education English to 8th and 9th graders, but I was hired mid-year. I'd like to take them through this and your 5 paragraph essay system. I know you can't evaluate them unseen, or do magic, but could I conceivably fit both systems into one semester? Or is it madness to even try?

Hello Mrs Blue! The answer depends on how much of the guides you wish to use. You can pick and choose some of the activities from Essay Apprentice to get them started. For example, you can start at the "Writing Paragraphs" section, then move into starting an essay. You could also skip the group essay and move into individual essays, then work into the Essay Architect program. It IS doable, but you would have to cut some things out. Hope this helps!

Several of the comments refer to the system as being perfect for ELD and special ed. I am teaching 7th graders whom are very unmotivated and quite lazy when it comes to writing assignments. Would this be a good fit for my population? I have been impressed with the quality of all your products so quality is not my concern-- I just need a product that will help me engage the kids with a systematic program that has everything laid out for me!

Hi there! I have had quite a few customers who have used Essay Apprentice quite successfully with just those types of students. The way it works is by getting the kids into writing without them knowing that they are on their way to formal writing. The first part is more along the lines of fun creative writing activities, then it moves into sentence writing activities, paragraph writing, then starting into formal writing. They get to do a group essay first, which is also a great motivator, as they know they don't have to write the whole thing! Once you get them confident working on those little things, they realize they can do the "big" essay, too! I honestly think you will be VERY happy with the program. Oh--and don't feel like you have to do everything in the Guide. There is a lot to pick and choose from, however, so pick what works best for your timeframe and your students. My classes are changing next year and I will be teaching a poetry unit. Do you have a poetry writing bundle? (I saw some individual poetry work, but thought I'd check since I saw you're having a sale!)
Also, I will be teaching a junior general English class where I think the Essay Archetect would be excellent. I then also noted the Essay Apprentice. This may work well for a 7th grade language class. (Even though it is marketed to stuggling writers, do you think it would work well for middle school?) I want to check with some co-teachers and the special ed teacher before I dive in to buy both....How long will your work be on sale?

I am not sure what poems you are teaching, but I have actually JUST released our newest product, Practical Poetry: A Guide for Teaching the Common Core Text Exemplars for Poetry in Grades 6-8.
