This handout is meant to introduce the idea of a euphemism to students in a way that they can understand. While it is introduced with some references to euphemisms used during WWII by the Nazis, most of the examples given are used in modern culture today, so that students can understand the concept.

The format should allow any teacher to modify it for their own purposes in teaching this vocabulary and linguistic concept to any secondary class.

This activity sugests that euphemisms are bad things. Actually, while some euphemisms attempt to mask the truth, most attempt to be more sensitive or less unsavory. Also, some of what this calls euphemisms are more accurate than the "blunt" terms: "blind" means unable to see anything, but not all visually impaired (euphemism) people are completely blind.

A few small grammatical problems that I will correct when I use it, but still a good activity.

I think that our students must learn that words are powerful and that what they say dictates how a situation may evolve. Excellent choice to teach about pleasant words. It means that there is some consideration of the feelings of others.
