Tired of students cutting and copying information from the internet and calling it a research paper? The topic of this unit, Everyday Heroes, makes that nearly impossible. Students find and interview a local person who volunteers their time to a charitable organization to make their community a better place. Students also research the charitable organization and write about how both the hero and organization are making a difference in their community. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to learn about volunteer opportunities, be exposed to positive role models, find inspiration, and write about it in a meaningful way. This is a real world task that students are motivated to complete. All of the preparation work is done. You will just need to make a few modifications to make it fit for your community.
